What are the differences between Sildenafil citrate and Vardenafil?

Erectile dysfunction or ED is a common sexual disorder in men above 40 years of age. However, nowadays, even young men suffer from erectile dysfunction. The Food and Drug Administration approved this medication in 2003. Levitra. The generic versions of this medicine include Snovitra Professional. It is marketed under the trade name Levitra.

Although these medications have the same mechanism of action, similar side effects, structure, they differ in appearance, dosage, potency, the onset of action, duration of effect.


Sildenafil citrate is available as diamond-shaped, light blue colored, oral pills, while Vardenafil is available as orange-colored, round-shaped oral pills.


Sildenafil citrate is available in three different dosages such as 25mg, 50 mg, and 100mg. Sildenafil citrate 50mg is a usual starting dose. The scientific studies have shown 100mg to be the most effective dose. A dose of 25mg can be useful for treating a mild degree of erectile dysfunction.

Vardenafil is sold in different dosages like 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg. The generally prescribed dose is 10mg. The dose can be increased up to 20mg.

The dosage of both medications can be increased or decreased depending on the overall health of a person and the severity of erectile function.

Onset of action

After taking the medication orally, the action of Sildenafil citrate starts within 30 to 60 minutes. Vardenafil shows its effect as early as 10 minutes post oral consumption according to a scientific study. Both these medications are to be taken at least half an hour before engaging in sexual activity for the best results.

Duration of effect

The action of Sildenafil citrate persists for a duration of four to five hours, while the action of Vardenafil lasts for about five to seven hours on average. Both, duration of effect and onset of action can vary depending on the body physiology of a person.


Vardenafil has more potency than Sildenafil citrate. A 10mg dose of Vardenafil is approximately equal to a 50mg dose of Sildenafil citrate.

Both Vardenafil and Sildenafil citrate has the above-mentioned differences. Note that these medications will only show the desired effect if a man is sexually excited. Take them only on demand and only once in 24 hours.
